So, I put together a makeshift portfolio this week for our business, Blueshift. I was a little surprised to hear what people had to say about it, though. I've always valued my friends' input, but their critiques have made me want to rebut how they're analyzing it. If you've ever browsed my gallery, you've found that I have a good chunk of photographs which are rather dark, certainly not as dark as others on deviantArt (I mean this with great respect and inspiration), but enough to make the casual viewer wonder. In any case, the comments have ranged from "Dark" to "Untraditional" in a rather negative tone. I think I've just refused to tailor my style to what others expect, and it's just infuriating to hear others wanting me to conform and create artwork which they expect. What kind of world would we be living in where everything was meticulously controlled, so that what we anticipate happens? Variety and originality is what fuels human zeal.
Ultimately, I do see where they're going with this. It just might not be appealing to potential clients, and this would be a negative for our business... I know they just want the best for us. Nevertheless, I will not disregard (what I would consider) my better artwork and artwork that best surmises my style for images that might poise me in a better financial stance. This does not mean that we'll never have a portfolio dedicated to our wedding shoots, portrait shoots, or nature shoots, but this is a portfolio representing a collective style.
Here are the images that I compiled in this short 4x6 album:
